Where Winter Leaves a Signature: Observing Frostweed (Verbesina virginica)

While birding outside in Fredericksburg, TX on New Years Day of 2018 - I paused for something quieter than wings... Verbesina virginica was in full icy "bloom"... or more commonly known as Frostweed.
At first glance, it’s an unassuming plant. But on cold mornings, it performs a small miracle.
As temperatures dip below freezing, the plant’s stems split just enough to release moisture, which freezes instantly into delicate ribbons of ice. These curling forms unfurl at the base like paper flowers... fragile, fleeting, and entirely sculptural. By mid-morning sun, they’re gone.
Finding frostweed felt like an invitation to slow down. While birding... my eyes are looking upward more often than not... but this moment asked me to look at my feet, to notice how winter leaves its signatures in quiet ways. Frostweed "blooms" for a little while then disappears without asking to be remembered.
Nature does this often... offers beauty briefly, then moves on.
