In a fun start to 2025, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology kicked off an artwork-filled week of bird art on their social media accounts for #BirdArtWeek2025 January 19 to 25. It was an art-a-day challenge and had already picked out "host artists" for each challenge. They explained the prompt, showed their own interpretation... and then it's your turn to post your take on it.

I have drawn many bird pieces in the past for commissions and was excited to draw one again after all these years. I was inspired by the prompt for January 20th: #MoonlitMigrators by Lauren Richelieu. She writes:
“Did you know that some birds migrate under the cover of night, using the stars and moon to guide their way? My prompt for this week focuses on #MoonlitMigrators! Imagine a host of sparrows traveling in the dark or a flock of ducks flapping through the moonlit sky. How will you illustrate this mysterious journey?”
After researching what bird species migrate by night, and which I might want to draw... I landed on just going with the sparrows mentioned in her prompt. 😅 I studied various silhouettes of sparrows in flight and did a rough thumbnail sketch for my drawing idea.

I chose my color palette for the moon and night sky and began to layer in the background.

The final touch was to add in the sparrow silhouettes. 💜

This new piece fits nicely on my studio wall along with other colored pencil drawings for inspiration. Sort of curious about maybe trying my had at the other prompts too... perhaps...?
Cheers until next time! ✨
